Earthworms and Worm Farms
Compost worms have the ability to convert kitchen waste or any organic matter into great soil called worm cast. The liquid by-product is a great liquid fertilizer called compost tea, perfect for the vegetable garden or potted plants.
Worm Power – Worms can turn waste into living bacteria with the power to transform poor quality soil into a rich, living growing medium for plants and crops.
Compost worms are generally sold as a mix of three varieties; Blue, Red and Tiger. All three of these worms have the ability to convert any organic waste into a nutrient and biota rich compost. With much emphasis being placed on global warming everybody needs to start to compost or dispose of their organic waste in a way that minimizes landfills.
Worm farms are an ideal way to reuse waste, to create usable matter. Whether on a balcony in a high rise or a backyard worm farm, they can be used to dispose of organic scraps; newspapers, food scraps, even dog waste.
Worms breed by laying eggs (known as a capsule), which can contain between 2-16 small worms. As they start to breed they lay a capsule every 7 days if conditions are correct, (eg. Moisture and temperature). Worm numbers can increase dramatically within a short period of time.
The main factor to consider when purchasing worms is their age. The ideal time is when they are mature enough to start breeding and decomposing the scraps.
There are many different types of worm farms on the market, all of which have their advantages.
Your worm farm will have the ability to produce a great liquid fertilizer and a brilliant potting mix either for the backyard or for an excellent balcony garden.
In the current climate crisis, everyone has a responsibility to dispose of waste conscientiously. Children love the worm farms, gardens will thrive and the environment will thank you for it.
